Cage the Elephant end their Neon Pill run in explosive form

It might have been pouring outside, but inside MGM Music Hall the storm had already arrived. On the final night of their Neon Pill Tour, Cage the Elephant brought a high-energy show that reminded everyone why they’ve remained one of modern rock’s most consistently thrilling live bands. The crowd packed the venue shoulder to shoulder, shaking off the rain and ready for chaos.

Openers Common People and Hey, Nothing warmed up the room with indie-leaning sets that fit the night’s restless energy. But as soon as the lights dimmed for the headliner, it was clear who everyone had come to see.

Cage the Elephant hit the stage with “Broken Boy,” the first of many songs punctuated by bursts of pyro that lit up the stage and the faces of a crowd already losing its mind. Frontman Matt Shultz was impossible to look away from - constantly in motion and leaping across the stage. While the rest of the band stayed anchored in their instruments, Shultz was leaping across the risers, throwing himself into the lights, and screaming the lyrics as he danced along.

The set leaned heavily on material from Social Cues and Neon Pill, with “Cry Baby,” “Spiderhead,” and “Cold Cold Cold” firing in quick succession. “Ready to Let Go” landed like a gut punch, and “Neon Pill” had the crowd swaying in unison. By the time the band reached “Trouble” and “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked,” the floor felt alive, the crowd screaming every word as if the songs had never left the radio.

One of the night’s quieter peaks came during “Cigarette Daydreams.” The pyro stopped, the lights softened, and the energy shifted from chaos to calm. Shultz eased his vocals, and the crowd carried the melody back to him, thousands of voices rising in the chorus. It was a rare moment of stillness before the finale “Come a Little Closer” snapped the room back into motion.

Across nearly twenty songs, Cage the Elephant balanced sheer spectacle with a kind of ragged sincerity. Shultz’s fearless moves on stage carried the show, while the band behind him kept every transition locked and seamless. Rain outside or not, Boston got one hell of a firestorm.
