Westerly, RI sits closer to the Connecticut border than to any major music market, and the United Theatre, for all its charm as a nonprofit venue with movie theaters and a music school stacked under one roof, doesn't see bands come through as often as the bigger markets. Saturday night, The 502s rolled through town, and it felt like the whole town to catch the show.
Thursday night was 95 degrees and the air was thick in Northern New Jersey. Crossroads in Garwood was filling up quickly in anticipation of Slow Joy. Slow Joy is the solo project of Dallas native Esteban Flores. His music blends grunge and emo with melodic lyrics and powerful guitars, so I was expecting some crowd surfing and a mosh pit or two. What we got instead was something so unexpected and beautiful that it served as a reminder of what music is all about—and gave us all a little hope for its future.
There are shows where the venue says it's sold out, but you’re at the show noticing there’s still a bit of room. Then there was Thursday night at The Sinclair in Cambridge, where G Flip packed the room so tightly that any semblance of personal space went completely away. The most packed I've ever seen it, and that's before accounting for the heat.
TD Garden on Tuesday night was a study in contrasts before a note was played. Tame Impala's core fanbase (millennial, male, guitar-oriented, and here for the psychedelic deep cuts) versus Djo’s (predominantly Gen Z, women, and very dedicated). The two camps coexisted easily enough, but the demographic split was visible from the photo pit. The show was sold out either way.
Monday nights aren’t what comes to mind when you imagine your typical concert experience. But the All The Feelings Tour doesn't really operate on typical concert logic, and MGM Music Hall on July 27th was proof of that.
On July 11, fans enjoyed the inaugural Seven Hills Music Festival, a one-day event held at the Palladium Outdoors in Worcester, Massachusetts. The festival was the vision of hometown heroes Four Year Strong to celebrate their 25th anniversary, featuring the band performing their debut album Rise or Die Trying in full.
The last time I saw Snõõper, I left bleeding with a split lip and worried I needed a dentist to check a tooth. As a photographer in the pit, I can usually plant my feet and track crowd surfers in my peripheral vision. But with Snõõper, the crowd climbed onstage and leaped off so fast that I needed eyes in the back of my head to stay clear of multiple stage divers at once. When lamenting my injury, I made sure to add, “and I would do it again.”
Tuesday night at Leader Bank Pavilion opened with a heat wave and closed with a Kate Bush cover. In between, Goose did what Goose does. They played long, played loud, and gave their devoted fanbase exactly what they came for.
