Chicago-based indie duo Side Hug released their new single “Everyone Else” on September 10. The single is the third off their debut album New Language, to be released on October 31.
The track is layered with twinkling guitars and synths from Allan Cardenas, leaving a new detail to catch with each listen. The atmospheric sound is grounded by Lyd Landor's vocals.
With the playfulness of the song, listeners might almost miss that the lyrics are filled with questions and uncertainty. The opening verse closes out with, “I have no idea where we stand anymore,” leading into a doubt-filled chorus of, “Do you love me baby?” and “Is it obvious and everyone else knows?”
“‘Everyone Else,' channels a sense that everyone is in on a secret except you," the band said in a press release. “The song is about trying to end a relationship when there's still a curiosity about it, and how the dark side of your thoughts can emerge, filling you with unease during those periods of uncertainty.”
According to Landor, these themes of uncertainty, and the changes that follow, continue throughout the band's upcoming album, New Language. “The album really focuses on this idea of change: accepting it, learning from it, and letting things go,” Landor said. “Things kind of suck right now, but they will get better. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other.”
Previously released singles “Temporary” and “Biweekly” offer another preview into the album's themes. “Temporary” is an upbeat track reminding listeners that tough times are only temporary. “Biweekly” focuses on the hope and desire to live for something more than a bi-weekly paycheck.
