In the heart of Sommerville: Night Talks rocks Warehouse XI

Sometimes discovering new music to listen to is difficult.  You’ve become tired of the same songs that you’ve had in rotation, and you’ll scour the depths of the record bin hoping to find something that scratches that itch you have, much to no avail.  Then suddenly you get invited to a show at the last second, and through all the odds, you stumble on to a band that quickly becomes your new obsession.  Night Talks is now that band for me, and hopefully they can be for you too.

Boston based indie rock band Dutch Tulips gave a perfect taste of what the night had in store.  With tight rhythms, even tighter vocals, and potentially the flashiest guitar player I have ever seen, Dutch Tulips were a force to be reckoned with.  Yet, Night Talks got on stage, and showed why they deserved to be the talk of the night.

Coming from Los Angeles, Night Talks made the long trek to take the stage at Warehouse XI deep in Sommerville, Massachusetts, their first time playing on the East Coast.  The self described alternative rock band kicked the show off with explosive energy, with lead singer Soraya Sebghati’s voice pulling you forward into an instant groove that kept you locked in on this band until the end.  Something different this band does is not having a defined setlist, as Soraya said during the set “We don’t plan out our setlists, we just go with what we are feeling in that moment”, making the post show drive home an obsessive search through their discography to find the choruses that sunk their teeth into your brain.

A particular stand out in the set was “Dream I’m In”, a captivating song that ties together during the chorus with guitarist, Jacob Butler, and bassist, Josh Arteaga providing back up vocals to perfectly compliment Soraya’s hypnotizing vocals that kept the crowd entranced.  Other highlights included “Nights”, an ode to seeing figures in the room when you can’t sleep, “Running On A Cloud”, and their latest single “Targets Ft Cory Wong”  While the band unfortunately did not bring Cory Wong to play the song with them, Jacob did inform me before the show that the guitar he was using that night was a gift from Cory Wong, after Wong had used that guitar on stage playing a show at The Ryman.

The room was not filled by any means, with maybe 30 people there, not that it mattered to Night Talks.  Where other bands may have phoned it in, or have become discouraged from a small showing, Night Talks gave a performance that was worthy of a sold out stadium.  I have the feeling that if only one person showed up for that show, this band would have given the same energy as if the venue had sold out.  They loved the fact that people were there at all, and they gave a show that you can’t help but talk about to anyone that will listen.

The next time you have to drive through the city at night, put on Night Talks, and let these songs make you feel as though they were made to soundtrack your life, you will not regret it.
