Post Sex Nachos Turn Inwards to Face Their Own Demons in ‘Big Bad’

I have been a big fan of Post Sex Nachos, an indie rock outfit based out of Nashville, for a couple years now, even getting the chance to work alongside them as they opened up for a band I tour with.
I had the opportunity to listen to their latest album early, and Big Bad continues the band’s tradition of giving you emotionally gut wrenching lyrics backed by some great beats that make you want to dance. Lead singer Sammy Elfanbaum told me:
“That’s kind of been a staple of ours since album one. Something that was always very important to us was being able to dance to the songs, but I inherently write sad songs. I guess it sort of developed into this melancholy/joyful blend over the years”
Big Bad was released last Friday, September 18, marking the band’s fifth full length album release. This album is the first time the band has had a label backing them up on the release, despite the band’s previous albums critiquing the music industry and late stage capitalism that are ruining the world around us.
While this album may have label backing, the album sprinkles all sorts of themes throughout it, with Elfanbaum said: “Outside of clamoring about the music industry and what it takes to succeed, there are also songs about love, change and loss scattered throughout the record.”
One of the stand out tracks for this latest album is called “Junk”, an appropriately titled song exploring how people hold onto all the emotional junk that makes them who they are. Elfanbaum goes on to say “This includes your mistakes and trauma, the things that are hard to accept but are nonetheless part of you. Hopefully you can take these as lessons and make yourself better.” A fun fact that Elfanbaum shared with me is that the wife of the album’s producer, Aaron Wagner, recorded the “Go” heard at the top of the track!

My personal favorite track off Big Bad is “Pop Tarts”, which features the wonderfully talented MARIS and Annelise Gonzalez. A song that feels ripped out of 2016, all about making it work to follow your dreams, despite the world bleeding you dry of money and having to survive off of pop tarts. While you may not have the money, you will have your friends and loved ones to share the hard times with, and you can always look back to see how far you have come.
The inclusion of MARIS and Gonzalez was brought after the song was completed, with an open spot on the second verse. Elfanbaum gushed about what these two artists brought to the song by telling me, “they added so many awesome harmonies that really made the song feel full, and they crushed the second verse.”
To celebrate the new album, Post Sex Nachos is hitting the road this fall, with the Big Bad North American Tour. Bringing along Fetch Tiger, Scarlet Demore, The Foxies, Hana Eid and Hannah Geller. The tour kicks off in Nashville, TN on September 25th, and will stretch from coast to coast.
