Sex Pistols Bring 50 Years of Punk to North America
In celebration of 50 years of punk music, the Sex Pistols are set to return to North America for their first full tour of the continent since 2003. The 2026 tour will see the legendary punk band joined by Essex punk outfit Bad Nerves on select dates, including stops in Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, D.C., Cleveland, Detroit and Columbus.
While the Sex Pistols have not mounted a full North American tour since 2003, the band did make a handful of U.S. appearances in the years that followed, including shows in Los Angeles in 2007 and Las Vegas in 2008. Their upcoming run therefore marks their first substantial North American tour in more than two decades.
The touring lineup features three of the band's original members: Steve Jones on guitar, Paul Cook on drums and Glen Matlock on bass. John Lydon, better known as Johnny Rotten, will not be joining the tour. Instead, Frank Carter will once again take over lead vocal duties.
Carter first joined Jones, Cook and Matlock in 2024 for two benefit concerts at London's Bush Hall, which were organized to help support the historic venue. The shows marked the first time the three surviving original members had performed together with Carter, and the lineup was met with an enthusiastic response. The collaboration has since continued, bringing together members of one of punk's foundational bands with one of the genre's most prominent contemporary performers.
The 2026 tour will see the band perform its landmark 1977 album Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols in its entirety, along with additional material spanning the group's catalogue. For longtime fans, the opportunity to hear the album that helped define British punk performed live by three of the musicians who created it is likely to be one of the tour's biggest draws.
The tour will also bring the Sex Pistols to Brooklyn on September 26 for the 2026 CBGB Festival at Under the K Bridge Park. The festival's lineup reads like a cross-generational history of punk and alternative music, with the Sex Pistols sharing the bill with Morrissey, Patti Smith, Interpol, Bikini Kill, Buzzcocks, Agnostic Front, Circle Jerks, Mannequin Pussy, High Vis and Bad Nerves, among others.
The New York appearance is particularly fitting given the festival's focus on the city's underground music legacy. CBGB's original Bowery club became one of the defining venues of the American punk movement, and while the Sex Pistols emerged from London's punk scene, their influence quickly crossed the Atlantic. Bringing the band together with artists representing multiple generations of New York's punk and alternative scenes makes the festival one of the most notable stops on the tour.
The Sex Pistols' original career lasted only a few chaotic years, but their influence has lasted half a century. That may be the most remarkable part of their return: five decades after they helped ignite the punk movement, audiences are still willing to pack venues to hear these songs performed live. Whether viewed as nostalgia, celebration or something closer to cultural archaeology, the band's continued ability to command this kind of attention speaks to the lasting power of Never Mind the Bollocks and the ideas surrounding it. Fifty years on, the Pistols may no longer be the angry young men who helped tear up the rules of rock music, but their music clearly still resonates.
