EGG PUNK BAND SNõõPER SIZZLES IN THE AUSTIN SUMMER HEAT

The last time I saw Snõõper, I left bleeding with a split lip and worried I needed a dentist to check a tooth. As a photographer in the pit, I can usually plant my feet and track crowd surfers in my peripheral vision. But with Snõõper, the crowd climbed onstage and leaped off so fast that I needed eyes in the back of my head to stay clear of multiple stage divers at once. When lamenting my injury, I made sure to add, “and I would do it again.” So, when Snõõper passed through Austin again, I was once more up front, positioned between the Hotel Vegas patio stage and a crowd whose movements were like pushing fast-forward on a cassette player.

Snõõper is a Nashville-based high-energy Egg Punk band, known for their fast-paced DIY garage sound and frenzied crowds. They could also be called Craft Punk; their stage shows include oversized paper mache stoplights, cellphones, and dumbbells. During their set, the lead singer and paper mache puppet artist, Blair Tramel, will don a giant green bug “Super Snõõper” (also called Mosh-quito) costume and join the swirling crowd for a song.

While this Austin summer has been tolerable compared to past summers, unexpected rain and flash floods have been frequent, and the humidity is intense. Friday’s outdoor patio show at Hotel Vegas was no exception: rain delays pushed the start times later, and by the time the shows started, everyone in the crowd was dripping with sweat. But neither the band nor the crowd let the heat slow them down. The band kept a bucket of ice and water bottles and would pour water over themselves to keep cool between songs, and returned to jump around the stage.

Snõõper blazed through their songs; the crowd bounced, compressed, and often formed a row on stage to dive in different directions, like scattering jumping beans. Toward the end of the show, Trammel ducked out and emerged as the mosh-quito and joined the crowd in the mosh pit. Snõõper is a band that radiates fun, with big smiles and pogo jumps, and an open invite to join the band onstage.

You can catch Snõõper on tour in July, and again in the fall when they join Wednesday and Mannequin Pussy for the Bitch Cabal Tour.
