People across social media may be reminiscing about 2016 right now, but for alt-rock band The Academy Is…, it’s all about the summer of 2005.
The Chicago-based group just announced their long-awaited album Almost There, the band’s first new album in 18 years, and with it dropped the lead single “2005”, released on January 14. The full album is set to release on March 27 via I Surrender Records.
The playful new single “2005” references the year of the band’s debut album, Almost Here. The track is filled with a warm nostalgia and a fondness for the past but also for all that’s changed over the years.
“Almost Here was the beginning. Almost There is the reflection. It’s about checking in with who you thought you’d be twenty years later, seeing what changed, what stuck, and what still feels like home.”
Beckett sings of all the major life events that have taken place in the nearly twenty years: a new dog, children, getting married, and starting writing songs again. The song builds into a fitting prediction of: “Might even bring TAI back from the dead.”

The twinkling synths and riffs from guitarist Mike Carden to match, bring the imagery of “the summer of 2005” to life, taking the listener on an afternoon car ride with the windows down and the sun shining. It’s as if bassist Adam Siska and drummer Andy Mrotek are driving the car as they carry the song forward.
