Live at Ace of Spades: Alt-pop favorite Waterparks take over Sacramento

Fog floods the streets of downtown Sacramento, locking in the humidity. Approaching Ace of Spades, you realize you're early and the line for the show is already wrapping around R Street. In search of a place to eat, you find a little taco spot across the street while you wait.

WINONA FIGHTER

Entering the venue you watch as the flood gates open to the fans and they rush towards the barricade fighting for the best view. Winona Fighter takes the stage. They come out swinging and this is where the perspective of the show changed. As an avid metal concert goer, I felt very out of place after listening to some of the top tracks from tonight’s bans during my time in traffic. But Coco Kinnon (lead singer) comes out with crazy vocals and screams. Sending chills down your spine, you can’t help but feel they have a Paramore-esque vibe to them. By the second song, Coco is in the crowd having the time of her life. And a little surprise as a metalcore fan, Josh Parra of Point North was drumming for them this tour!

FOXY SHAZAM

After Winona left the stage, you could feel the tension of anticipation building. The fans wanted more. Foxy Shazam takes the stage. If you come from a similar background to me, you might not know who they are. The best way to describe a Foxy show is Led Zepplin-style and showmanship, mixed with Queen and Freddy Mercury-styled vocals!

The band thoroughly surprised me as they came out strong, confident, and not holding back. The lead singer, Eric Nally, performed at 100 percent for their entire set doing somersaults, jumping around, hitting high notes, all without missing a breath. Keyboardist, Sky White, showed his adaptability by having his keyboard held up by fans as he stood on the barricade and played.

WATERPARKS

Waterparks was truly an enjoyable experience. They came out swinging with an amazing set design, flashing lights, a good audio team and overall experience, plus a fun multi-interlude that was played over the video screen they had behind the drum kit. The interlude felt very similar to Ice Nine Kills video transitions for their set, which brought the crowd to life the crowd and just drew out the anticipation for their fans, even more.

Waterparks took time out of their set to talk with the fans and play songs from the crowd’s requests. The crowd participation in the show made for a wild experience! The band played a total of 29 songs which is the longest set list I’ve ever experienced at a show the year.
