Bryce Vine caps off tour with a rocking show in Boston
Bryce Vine is no stranger to blending genres with his music, with his music primarily being rooted in heavy bass rap with pop sensibilities. However, Vine’s latest album is his largest departure yet. Let’s Do Something Stupid leans into Vine’s SoCal pop punk roots, enlisting the help of pop punk legends like Goldfinger, State Champs, and The Home Team. Vine decided he wanted to do something different while touring this new album, doing a shorter run of shows in smaller, more intimate venues across the United States. With his final show of the tour landing at Brighton Music Hall in Boston, Massachusetts, he treated fans to a special night blending rap and pop punk smoothly as he played all his music, not just the new.
BRAKE
With a capacity of 500 people, a sold out show at Brighton Music Hall is a packed event, and fans turned out for Bryce Vine, with the room filling up prior to the first opener Brake. Las Vegas-based artist Brake set his own tone for the night, with his bright orange hair and glam rock inspired sound, his short-but-sweet set got the crowd moving, dancing, and energized for the rest of the night.
OUT IN FRONT
Following Brake was Out In Front, a Los Angeles-based and woman-led pop punk band, who were featured on Bryce Vine’s new song “Spotlight”. Out In Front kicked the show’s energy into high gear, with ripping guitars, crashing drums, and some incredible pop punk hooks. For their third song of the night, Out In Front broke out a cover of Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Goin Down”, even bringing out Vine’s DJ to play trumpet with them for that song. Out In Front brought the pop punk energy, setting the tone for the rest of the night, and rocking BMH in the process.
BRYCE VINE
While Vine’s show centered around his new pop punk sound, the footprint on stage for his band was small, with just a drum set, a DJ booth, and Vine himself on guitar. Don’t mistake this for a lack of fleshed out sound though, because the second Bryce Vine stepped out on stage, the bass hit from the DJ booth so hard you could feel it rattle your teeth. Vine ripped into his guitar, and the crowd went nuts. Fans singing every word louder than Vine coming through the speakers.
While Vine was the main star of the show, his drummer, Chad Hasty, was a high stand out point. Hasty’s drum propelled every song, while showcasing his bright personality. Cracking jokes with Vine, interacting with the photographers, and encouraging the audience, Hasty was a bright personality on the stage in his own right.
Rounding out the trio during Vine’s set was Lvckydave, who not only DJ’ed for Vine but also played trumpet as well. Dave came out earlier in the show during Out In Front’s set, but took his place at the DJ booth rocking a Boston Bruins Happy Gilmore jersey. Keeping the energy going, Dave was also prepared with a full soundboard for effect while Vine cracked jokes between songs.
While Vine was touring for the new album, he still played his most well known songs, alternating between playing his latest pop punk hooks on his guitar for songs like “Yea Yea Yea” and rapping his older songs like “Drew Barrymore”. At one point during the set, Bryce Vine ripped into “Spotlight”, a track off of “Let’s Do Something Stupid” that features Out In Front, with lead vocalist Madie Renner joining Vine on stage for the song.
Fans loved the new songs from Vine just as much as the old, with fans dancing, screaming, and rocking to every song. Vine even threw the mic to a fan at one point during the show, who then proceeded to rap every word correctly, making the band go wild. Another point, as Vine got in the chorus of a song, he dove out into the crowd, surfing to the back of the room, before walking through the crowd back to the barricade as he started his next song. You could tell Vine loved his fans and the energy they brought, from answering questions shouted at him, to sharing info on his personal life. At one point, a fan called out “Favorite memory from Berklee?”, where Vine briefly attended school within Boston, with Vine responding playfully with “Leaving”.
Vine closed the night out with his biggest songs going from “La La Land” to ending with his platinum hit “Sour Patch Kids”. Bryce Vine gave his fans a night highlighting his whole career, giving fans the songs they knew and loved, and ushering them into his new sound and era he is going for. Vine will continue his year with performances at Warped Tour this summer.
