Another Middle Eastern detonation, another creeping civil war, another mother lost to political rift. Somewhere amid the loaded news cycle the world is free and tender and in love, somewhere worth fighting for. she’s green’s radically charged new single, “mettle”, dares to remember this possibility.

Zofia Smith, front woman of the Minneapolis-based band, expressed her intentions with the single, which calls for persistence through resistance:

“‘mettle’ channels the frustration and discomfort that stem from what often feels like constant bad news, while also being an anthem of resilience and the courage to take action and bring about positive change,”

Like an oil painting in creation, “mettle” is built out of shimmering layers, minor notes and raw female vocals, which beg, “it’s not over yet.” The overall tone is yearning and cathartic. On the dreampop sliding scale, it exists someplace between The Marias and Mannequin Pussy, a scratched itch balance of raging percussion and soft honey nostalgia.

The single reaches back to the much-needed genre of political music. Explicitly about media exhaustion, the song is a call and response for listeners to care again.

No stranger to the dream pop community, the band has played alongside other genre hard-hitters such as Glixen, Slow Pulp, and Blondshell. Fans, whether of she’s green or the genre in general, will have much to look forward to with the upcoming Slide Away Festival, set to take place at the Brooklyn Paramount on May 16. The year will also see she’s green supporting Chapterhouse, and separately Bad Suns and Slow Crush.

she’s green is for listeners who walk through windy nights, who pick wildflowers and live in whimsy. If you love and hate in particular ways, if you feel strongly about the inner workings of your own mind, or mine, if you eat your heart out in portions bigger than you can stomach — this is the music for you!
