Save Ferris Revisit Their Debut Album at Taffeta Music Hall
What if you could go back 29 years for one night? Save Ferris gave fans exactly that, playing their debut album It Means Everything in the way it was meant to be heard-front to back!
The lights were dimmed and out of the darkness emerged the horn line opening with “The World Is New.” The band filled the stage as the crowd grew louder and louder and didn’t stop until they were singing the opening verse with vocalist Monique Powell. The dance floor of Taffeta Music Hall was full of fans that have been listening since the debut album came out — and even fans that weren’t born yet (myself included)!
When a band announces a tour, the setlist is always the hot topic. What songs will be played? With this special tour that took over North America, fans knew they were getting It Means Everything in its entirety. So, if you memorized the track list, you were prepared!
The band continued the energy with “Nobody But Me” and quickly brought it down to a sultry yet dance-y version of “Superspy.” With lots of horns and a tight band behind her, Monique danced and did her mic stand trick where she uses just the mic chord to fling the mic stand to and from her hand. It’s clear that Monique knows how to wow a crowd!
Next in the set was a song I was not used to hearing in the middle of the set: “Come on Eileen.” While tonight I was enjoying the evening supporting friends, when I went on tour with them in April, that was always the closing song. It’s clear to me why this is a fan favorite!
Behind Monique’s incredible vocals and stage presence is a collection of laser focused, high energy and talented musicians that keep the crowd on their feet. AJ Bartholomew’s guitar and Eric Walsh’s bass lines pair nicely with their vocal harmonies. Pat Salmon’s drums kept the rhythm flowing through fans’ chests while Ethan Saxe and Evan Linares’ horn lines gave them a melody to skank to.
The set calmed back down following “Goodbye”. This is one of my favorites in the set. Monique really pulls out her powerhouse vocals and gets intimate with her risque dance moves. Although I will side note that her vocals in “Lies” are also mind blowing!
The band continued with the album track by track “Sorry My Friend”, “Lies”, and “Little Differences” and into their song about canned meat.
“Spam” is always a party song between the fans and the band. A new addition to this set is a little dance breakdown the band does. I called it their “cute little footwork.” There’s something so precious about grown men doing a little two step in a line together!
The party continued with “Under 21” which was a funny one to hear considering the band jokes that I’m under 21 because I look very young.
The set ended on a high note with “Everything I Want To Be.” Even though the set was over, fans were still cheering for more! They came back out and did “What You See Is What You Get” and “Too Drunk To Fuck” which was a wild song to hear!
It was such a high energy and exciting show that I’m grateful to have been a part of. Thank you to Save Ferris for coming to Lowell, MA.
The It Means Everything Tour continues through the rest of August with some dates in September and a stop at Florida Warped Tour in November. Make sure you relive the nostalgia and catch a show because this is not one to miss!
