State Champs release high-energy new single Common Sense

Back with their melodic pop-punk sound, State Champs released their latest single, “Common Sense,” on September 2. The single, released via Pure Noise Records, is jam-packed with catchy riffs, driving bass lines, and pulsing drum fills — all staples of a State Champs earworm.

The single jolts to life, with the demanding guitar and drums that will carry the song and immediately showing off a heavier sound to the Albany-based group. “Common Sense” will make a natural addition to the band’s high-energy live shows. It’s easy to imagine scream-singing the chorus: We never had a sense in common because that was never what you wanted.

“Common Sense brings out a slightly darker and heavier side to us while keeping the Champ’s integrity strong,” the band has said. “Lyrically, it’s about completely investing yourself in someone while also being naive to the fact that you never had anything in common to begin with.”

The frustration of not seeing eye-to-eye is palpable through lyrics such as:

You’ll find a way to take what I said and spin it //

You want to move on but you just can’t quit it //

You want to be strong but your heart’s not in it //

The release is the band’s first since their self-titled album, released in November 2024. It offers each member a chance to shine with Derek DiScanio’s vocals, Tyler Szalkowski on guitar, Ryan Scott Graham on bass, and Evan Ambrosio on drums.

The single comes just ahead of their tour supporting heavy hitters A Day to Remember and Yellowcard, which runs through September. State Champs will also play a string of festivals: Four Chord Music Festival on September 13, Vans Warped Tour Orlando on November 15 – 16, and Aftershock Festival on October 2. They will also be back on the Emo’s Not Dead Cruise in January 2026.
