Homecoming at The Sinclair: Coral Moons brings Boston back to life
If you have never been to a Coral Moons show before, you are missing out. Their concert consists of a set that is so emotionally charged, that it will make you feel as though you have gone through the most cathartic therapy session, and will leave you feeling lighter than when you entered the venue.
With two incredible albums, Fieldcrest and Summer of U, and an equally amazing EP, Quarter Life Crisis, Coral Moons is no stranger to finding the genre of music that fits the story they are looking to tell, and their live shows are no different, especially when the band is playing their favorite venue in the greater Boston area, The Sinclair.
While Coral Moons formed in Boston, they have since relocated to Rochester, New York. Don’t get it twisted though, this show was a homecoming, and the crowd welcomed the band back home once more. The band was in the lobby greeting, hugging, and saying hi to old friends and new fans all the same, making everybody feel like they were a part of this family. The air buzzed with laughter and conversations, until eventually the lights dimmed, and the strike of the guitar shut the room up.
Kicking off their set with “I Feel Alive”, the energetic, hypnotic guitar rhythms and frontwoman Carly Kraft’s vocals drew you in like a siren's song, except they made you want to dance instead of crash your ship into rocks! The crowd took this energy and ran with it, immediately drawing away from the bars, and packing together to groove. Going from high energy song to the next, the band kept you moving, until they didn’t.
The show took a turn into the contemplative, with Coral Moons transitioning the energy with “Beach Song”, before leading in their own version of “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac. The band held the energy there, forcing the fans to adapt to the shift, with the jumping and dancing replaced by gentle swaying. The mood change didn’t discourage fans though, everyone was just as entranced with the show, but now it felt more intimate.
A Coral Moons show is about sharing experiences, with fans seeing who else related to the song that made you cry when you first heard it. At one point after “Davis Square”, Carly asked the crowd “Anyone else here ever get ghosted in Davis Square”, prompting a few members of the crowd to call out in response, and causing those fans to see each other and connect, if at least for a couple moments.
The show didn’t end with these melancholy feelings though. Bringing the energy slowly back up with “In Space”, the two guitars built up on each other, until everyone was jumping and headbanging once more. The energy kept coming with the band closing out with “Made Up My Mind”, featuring a call and response solidifying the connection the band made throughout the night.
Coral Moons will bring you in, make you confront the feelings that you have been trying to avoid, and then bring you back up with the amount of love that you will feel in that room. They have built a community, and their music is an invitation to find them at a show near you and join them in this wonderful world they have created.
